Simplifying Medical Bill Payments with Bon Secours Medical Group

Handling medical bills can be complicated and confusing. At Bon Secours Medical Group, we understand the hassle of tracking multiple bills from various providers and dealing with insurance claims. That’s why we offer a streamlined online bill pay system to simplify payments for our patients.

Overview of Bon Secours Medical Group

Bon Secours Medical Group is part of the larger Bon Secours health system, which operates hospitals, urgent care centers, physician practices, and other healthcare facilities primarily in Virginia and South Carolina. Our medical group consists of over 200 primary care and specialty providers across 30+ practice locations.

We provide high-quality compassionate care with a focus on the whole person – body, mind and spirit. Our mission is to bring health, hope and humanity to the communities we serve.

Challenges of Medical Billing

Navigating medical bills can be frustrating. A single doctor visit or procedure often generates bills from multiple sources – the hospital, testing labs, individual physicians who provided treatment, anesthesiologists, radiologists, etc. Oftentimes these bills don’t all arrive at once, requiring you to track various statements over weeks or months.

Additionally, insurance claims have to be filed and processed before you know your final out-of-pocket costs. You may receive bills for the full amounts initially, before adjusted bills later come reflecting the negotiated insurance rates.

This whole process is time-consuming and opaque, Patients are often confused about who they actually need to pay and for how much,

Benefits of Our Online Bill Pay System

To simplify this billing complexity, Bon Secours Medical Group offers online bill pay through our patient portal This gives you a centralized place to view and pay all outstanding balances for care received at our facilities and practices.

Some key benefits include:

  • Consolidated Statements – View bills from multiple providers in one place instead of tracking various statements. Our system aggregates charges so you have a unified bill reflecting all care from your visit.

  • Payment Tracking – Clearly see what has been paid, what is pending insurance, and what stills needs to be paid. No more guessing games.

  • Secure Online Payments – Securely pay outstanding balances easily online 24/7 using credit/debit card or bank account.

  • Payment Plan Options – For larger balances, enroll in automated recurring payments over 3, 6, or 12 months to better manage costs.

  • Billing Support – Get billing help through online chat or by phone during business hours if you have any questions.

  • Insurance Updates – Easily view or update your insurance information online to prevent potential claim issues.

  • Paperless Bills – Opt out of mailed paper statements to access bills digitally and reduce clutter.

Accessing Online Bill Pay

Our online bill pay system can be accessed through our BonSecours MyChart patient portal using your secure login credentials. MyChart provides your full health record as well as a range of features like appointment scheduling, prescription management, and communication with your care team.

If you already have a MyChart account, you can simply log in at www.bonsecours.com/mychart to view and pay bills through the Billing tab.

If you don’t yet have a MyChart account, you can easily sign up at any Bon Secours facility or on the MyChart website. You just need your medical record number which you can get from the facility registration desk or any recent statement.

Within MyChart, the Billing section lets you view open and recently paid bills, make payments, enroll in a payment plan, and update insurance and demographic details.

Paying Without a MyChart Account

If you prefer not to create a MyChart account, we also allow patients to pay bills as a guest through our online bill pay portal at www.bonsecours.com/billpay.

You will need your Bon Secours account number and billing details to use the guest pay option. Account numbers are provided on all paper or electronic statements.

The guest pay portal offers the ability to view bills, make payments by card or e-check, and get billing help. However, it does not provide the full functionality of the MyChart integrated billing experience.

Billing Process and Policies

To help you better understand our billing and collections process, here are some key policies and information:

  • Bills are typically generated after claims have been filed and processed by your insurance, if applicable. Any balance left after insurance is your responsibility.

  • Statements are mailed monthly for any outstanding balances. You can opt out of mailed statements and only receive electronic bills through MyChart.

  • Due dates for balances are indicated on each statement, typically 30 days from the statement date.

  • We accept a variety of payment options including credit/debit cards, checks, Health Savings Account cards, and online bank payments.

  • Payment plans can be arranged if needed for larger balances. A 20% down payment is required, with the remaining balance paid over 3, 6, or 12 months based on predefined schedules.

  • For uninsured patients, we automatically apply a discount based on average insurance rates so you don’t pay more than insured patients.

  • Our financial assistance program provides sliding-scale discounts for qualifying patients based on income and family size.

  • If you feel a bill is inaccurate, contact our billing department promptly to dispute the charges and correct any potential issues.

  • Accounts over 120 days past due may be sent to collections. Please reach out to discuss payment plans or financial assistance before this occurs.

Estimating Your Costs

We know it’s important to understand the potential costs of treatment. However, it can be difficult to provide exact estimates in advance due to variables like insurance coverage, actual services provided, complications requiring different care, etc.

In general, self-pay patients (uninsured) will receive the greatest discounts. Insured patients’ out-of-pocket costs depend on their specific plan benefits, deductibles, and co-insurance amounts.

For surgeries and inpatient procedures, we can provide an estimated cost range in advance based on typical diagnosis-related charges. This estimate won’t include physician fees, which are billed separately.

Once claims are filed after your care, your insurance company’s Explanation of Benefits (EOB) will specify covered amounts, negotiated rates, and your remaining deductible/co-insurance balance owed.

We recommend contacting your insurance carrier directly with specific coverage questions and estimates for your particular benefits. Your insurer’s member services team can provide the most accurate benefit details.

Partnering for Health

At Bon Secours Medical Group, we aim to provide both compassionate quality care and an excellent patient billing experience. Our simple online bill pay system helps streamline payments and puts you in control of your medical finances.

We want to be your partner in health, allowing you to focus on getting better, not worrying about medical bills. Please reach out with any questions – we’re here to help!

What about Medicare and Medicaid?

Medicare and Medicaid pay hospitals according to a set fee schedule. It represents a discount from a hospital’s billed charges. Numerous factors, such as co- insurance and deductibles affect your own financial responsibility. A summary of Medicare patient payment requirements is provided at Medicare.gov.

The average total covered charges for each hospital by Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG) for Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries can also be found at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Why did my insurance only pay part of my bill?

Most insurance plans require you to pay a deductible and/or coinsurance. In addition, you could be responsible for services not covered by your policy. Please contact your insurance company for specific answers to your questions. You should receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurance company indicating how much the insurance company paid and how much you owe for out-of-pocket expenses.
