#How to Pay Your Utility Bill with the City of Lincoln

Paying your utility bill on time is an important responsibility as a resident of Lincoln. The City of Lincoln offers multiple convenient payment options to fit every resident’s needs. In this article, we’ll walk through the various ways you can pay your City of Lincoln utility bill, whether online, by mail, in person, or through automatic payments.

##Online Payments

The easiest way for most people to pay their City of Lincoln utility bill is online. The City allows online payments through their third-party processor, Merchant Transact.

To make an online payment, you’ll need either your account number or customer ID Both of these numbers can be found on your paper or emailed utility bill

With your account number or customer ID, visit the Merchant Transact website and follow the steps to input your information and make a payment by credit/debit card or bank account. Online payments can be made as one-time payments or as recurring automatic payments.

One advantage of paying online is that you can also enroll in paperless billing Going paperless means you’ll receive an email notification when your bill is ready and you’ll pay online – no more paper bills cluttering up your mailbox!

##Pay By Mail

If you prefer not to pay online, you can mail in a payment to the City of Lincoln Utility Billing department.

To pay by mail, detach the payment stub from your paper utility bill and mail it along with a check or money order to:

It’s important to include the payment stub with your mailed payment so it can be matched up to your account. Mailed payments must be received by the due date to avoid late fees. The City does not go by postmarked dates.

##Pay In Person

For those who prefer the most hands-on payment method, you can pay your City of Lincoln utility bill in person at City Hall. Payments can be made at the 1st floor Utility Billing office in cash, check, or credit/debit card.

City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5PM, excluding City holidays.

##Drop Boxes

The City also offers drop boxes as a payment option. Drop boxes are locked receptacles where you can drop off a check or money order payment (no cash!).

There are drop box locations at:

  • Inside City Hall on the 1st floor

  • Outside City Hall to the right of the bulletin board

  • Across the street behind the Art League building

Payments left in the drop box by 5PM will receive same-day credit.

##Automatic Bank Draft

For ultimate convenience, City of Lincoln utility customers can enroll in Automatic Bank Draft (ABD) payments. With ABD, your bill payment is automatically withdrawn from your bank account each month on the due date.

To start ABD, you must first pay any account balance in full. Then, print and submit the ABD form with a voided check, or submit the application electronically. It takes about 30 days to establish ABD payments.

ABD ensures you never miss a payment deadline. Just make sure there are sufficient funds in your linked bank account on the withdrawal date each month.

##Payment Assistance and Resources

If you’re having trouble paying your utility bill, the City of Lincoln offers assistance programs and resources:

  • Payment arrangements – Contact the Utility Billing office to set up a payment plan if you cannot pay the full amount due. This can help you avoid service interruption.

  • Third party notification – Designate a third party to be notified if your account becomes past due or faces disconnection.
