Paying utility bills can sometimes feel like a hassle. You’ve got to remember when it’s due, locate the bill, write a check, find a stamp and envelope, and get it in the mail on time. Forget just one of those steps, and you might get hit with a late fee. But it doesn’t have to be that difficult – not when you get your electricity, water, and other utilities from Shakopee Public Utilities. This municipal utility provider offers multiple convenient payment options to make paying your bill quick, easy, and stress-free.
I’ve been a Shakopee resident for over 10 years now, and I can’t say enough good things about the service from Shakopee Public Utilities (SPU). They make everything, including paying my bill, simple and convenient. In this article, I’ll cover the different ways you can pay an SPU bill, including online, phone, in person, by mail, and more. Whether you prefer the ease of autopay, the flexibility of pay-as-you-go, or just dropping a check in the mail, SPU has a payment method that will work for you.
Online Bill Pay with SmartHub
The easiest and most convenient way to pay your SPU bill is through SmartHub, their online account management and payment system. With SmartHub, you can pay your bill anytime, anywhere in just a few quick clicks on your computer, phone, or tablet.
To get started, you’ll first need to enroll in SmartHub by creating an account and linking it to your SPU account with your account number. Once set up, SmartHub allows you to
- View your current charges and account balance
- See your billing and payment history
- Make one-time payments on your account
- Set up recurring autopay so your bill gets paid automatically each month
- Go paperless by opting into e-bills instead of mailed paper bills
- Monitor your daily usage if you have a smart meter
- Report outages, submit service requests, and more
Making one-time payments in SmartHub is easy. Just log into your account, enter your payment info, and confirm. The payment will be instantly applied to your account. With autopay, you can set it up once and then not have to worry about missing payments or dealing with late fees again. I have autopay setup to charge my credit card a few days before my bill is due each month. It’s one less thing I have to remember to do.
The convenience of SmartHub is hard to beat. I can quickly log in from my phone and pay a bill at any time, even if I’m away on vacation. It’s given me much more flexibility and control over my payments. I’d recommend all SPU customers enroll in SmartHub.
Pay by Phone
In addition to online payments SPU offers a pay-by-phone option that’s super quick and easy. To make an automated payment over the phone just call 833-498-1072. The system will guide you through the payment process by prompting you to enter your account number and the payment amount.
The first time you call, you’ll need to set up a 4-digit PIN number that you’ll use for verification on future calls. After that, making payments takes less than a minute. Just dial the number, enter your account number, confirm the amount due, and then provide your PIN. The payment will immediately be posted to your account.
The phone payment system is available 24/7, so it’s extremely convenient. I often make my payment over the phone while I’m commuting to work or when I’m out running errands. It’s fast, simple, and helps me avoid late fees if I happen to forget my bill is due.
One tip is to save the phone number in your contacts for quicker access. I have it saved under “SPU Payment” so it’s at my fingertips whenever I need it. The pay-by-phone option gives you flexibility to pay your SPU bill from anywhere at any time.
Pay in Person
For those who prefer to pay bills in person, you can stop by the Shakopee Public Utilities Service Center located at 255 Sarazin Street in Shakopee. The service center has a lobby and a drive-up window where you can pay by cash, check or credit/debit card.
The service center is open:
- Monday, Tuesday & Thursday: 7am – 4:30pm
- Wednesday: 7am – 6pm
- Friday: 7am – 11am
If stopping by during open hours isn’t convenient, the service center also has a 24-hour drop box located next to the drive-up window. You can drop off a check or money order payment at any time of day or night. Just be sure to include your payment stub or write your SPU account number on the check so it gets properly credited.
Paying in person ensures that your payment will be immediately received and processed. The friendly staff at the service center can also answer any questions you have about your account or charges. If you happen to be out running errands around town, dropping in to pay at the service center is quick and easy.
Pay by Mail
Sending your utility payment through the mail is one of the more classic bill payment methods. While it’s not as fast as the electronic payment options, it can be a good solution for those who prefer writing paper checks or don’t want to deal with technology.
To pay your Shakopee Public Utilities bill by mail, simply write a check payable to Shakopee Public Utilities and mail it to:
Shakopee Public Utilities
PO Box 470
Shakopee, MN 55379
Be sure to include your payment stub or write your SPU account number on the check so it gets credited properly. Allow 3-5 business days for your mailed payment to be received and processed by SPU to avoid any late fees.
I’d recommend dropping your payment in the mail at least 5-7 days before the due date just to be safe. The US Postal Service advises that first class mail can take 2-3 days for delivery, so you need to account for processing time as well.
While paying by mail is one of the slower options, it can be a good fit for seniors or others who prefer using traditional payment methods. The mail is reliable and allows you to easily track sent payments if needed. Just be vigilant of mailing dates to ensure your utility payment arrives on time.
Recurring Bank Draft Payments
If you want the convenience of automated payments but don’t want to provide your credit/debit card information online, another option offered by Shakopee Public Utilities is recurring bank drafts from your checking or savings account.
To setup recurring bank drafts, you’ll need to mail in or drop off a completed ACH authorization form with a voided check. The form authorizes SPU to electronically debit your bank account each month to pay your utility bill. You can download the ACH form from the SPU website.
