What Happens If You Don’t Pay Your Spectrum Bill?

Paying bills on time is an important part of financial responsibility. However life happens and sometimes you may find yourself unable to pay a bill by the due date. This can happen with any type of bill including your Spectrum cable and internet bill. But what exactly happens if you don’t pay your Spectrum bill?

Spectrum, like all service providers, wants its customers to pay their bills on time and in full every month. Failure to do so can lead to problems that range from annoying to serious.

Late Fees

Sent to Collections

If your Spectrum bill remains unpaid for an extended period of time, typically 60 to 90 days, Spectrum will escalate the situation by sending your account to collections. This means they assign your debt to a collections agency who will attempt to recover what you owe.

The collections agency will contact you by phone and mail demanding payment of your past due Spectrum bill, plus any accumulated late fees. Their aggressive tactics include frequent calls, letters, and threats to damage your credit score or take legal action if you don’t pay up.

Having an account in collections is very harmful to your credit score and can make it difficult for you to get approved for loans, credit cards, and other services in the future. The collection will stay on your credit report for 7 years. Paying off a collections account does not remove it from your credit history.

Credit Damage

Can They Ban You from Service?

Spectrum usually will not completely ban you from their service forever, even if you leave them with an unpaid balance. However, they can refuse to sign you up as a new customer again until the old debt is paid off.

If you cancel your Spectrum account with a past due amount, wait until you’ve paid off the debt before trying to open new service. Spectrum will run a check for outstanding balances when you apply and deny service if you still owe them money.
