Paying your insurance bill on time is important to keep your policy active and avoid any lapses in coverage For Windhaven Insurance Company policyholders, there are a few different options to pay your bill conveniently
Windhaven Insurance Company was a property and casualty insurer located in Miami, Florida that provided non-standard auto insurance policies to around 73,000 policyholders. On December 12, 2019, the company was placed into rehabilitation and then on January 6, 2020, Windhaven Insurance Company was ordered into liquidation.
If you had an active insurance policy with Windhaven Insurance Company, here is what you need to know about paying any outstanding or pending bills:
Pay Online
The easiest way to pay a bill is online. Windhaven Insurance Company had an online member portal where policyholders could log in and view their account details, policy documents, pay their bill, and more
However, with the liquidation of Windhaven Insurance Company, this online portal is likely no longer accessible. If you try to login and receive an error, it means the online payment system has been deactivated.
Pay by Phone
Another option was to pay your Windhaven Insurance Company bill over the phone. By calling the customer service number listed on your insurance ID card or policy documents, you previously could speak to a representative and process a payment by phone.
But again, with the insurer now in liquidation, any customer service phone numbers are likely disconnected. Attempting to call likely results in getting a message that the number is no longer in service.
Pay by Mail
Sending a check or money order by mail was a common way to pay Windhaven Insurance Company bills. The mailing address for payments was listed on your insurance bill.
However, now that the insurer is in liquidation, do not mail any payments to previous Windhaven Insurance Company addresses. Those locations are closed and any mailed checks will be returned or rejected.
Contact the Receivership Team
With Windhaven Insurance Company in liquidation, the Florida Department of Financial Services was appointed by court order as the Receiver. This means the Department is handling the shutdown and claims process for the defunct insurer.
As a Windhaven Insurance Company policyholder with a pending bill, you should contact the Windhaven Receivership team at the Florida Department of Financial Services:
- Email: [email protected]
- Phone: 850-413-3081 or 1-800-882-3054
The Receivership team can look up your policy details and bill amount owed. They can then advise on potential options to make the outstanding payment.
Payment to the Guaranty Association
In many states, outstanding Windhaven Insurance Company bills may need to be paid to the state’s Insurance Guaranty Association instead of directly to the Receiver.
Guaranty Associations provide coverage for certain claims if an insurer becomes insolvent. In Florida, it is the Florida Insurance Guaranty Association (FIGA). Unearned premium refunds have been processed through FIGA already for Windhaven Insurance Company policyholders.
If you still owe a premium or have an outstanding bill, FIGA may handle collection of those funds instead of the Florida Department of Financial Services. Contact FIGA to check if they are the correct entity to make payment to.
Uncashed Refund Checks
Many Windhaven Insurance Company policyholders were due premium refunds when their policies were cancelled due to the liquidation. These unearned premium refund checks were sent out by FIGA.
If you received a refund check but have not cashed it yet, do not attempt to cash any outstanding Windhaven Insurance Company checks. The company’s bank accounts are closed so the checks would bounce.
Contact the Receivership team about any uncashed Windhaven Insurance Company checks and they can assist with reissuing the refund amount if eligible. Provide your policy details, check amount, and check number.
Pay Agents Owing Unearned Commission
Independent insurance agents who sold Windhaven Insurance Company policies may owe unearned commission that was paid but not yet earned due to the cancellation of in-force policies.
Agents who have a pending bill for unearned commission refunds should send payment to:
State of Florida
Division of Rehabilitation & Liquidation
P.O. Box 946694
Atlanta, GA 30394-6694
Be sure to include details on the policies related to the return commission so it can be properly applied when received.
Late Payments and Lapsed Coverage
At this point, with Windhaven Insurance Company shut down, policyholders no longer need to worry about making payments to avoid coverage lapses. All Windhaven Insurance Company policies were cancelled effective February 5, 2020.
Any outstanding bill you owed to Windhaven Insurance Company will now just be handled as part of the liquidation and claims process. So you do not risk a lapse in coverage for non-payment.
However, you should seek replacement insurance right away by contacting an independent insurance agent in your area. Do not drive uninsured. Having a new insurance policy in place is important for continuous coverage.
Questions about Your Bill
If you have any questions about an outstanding insurance bill or payment owed to Windhaven Insurance Company, contact the Windhaven Receivership team at the Florida Department of Financial Services.
You can email them or call the hotline number to speak to someone who can look up your policy details and provide instructions on any pending payments.
The Receivership team can also help if you already sent a payment that has not been applied yet. They can trace the payment and properly credit your policy if it was received but not processed before the liquidation.
Having the right payment information ensures your policy and billing status is accurate. This helps streamline the Windhaven Insurance Company shutdown process for all involved. Contacting the Receivership team also allows you to get confirmation on any refunds or unearned premiums you may be owed.
