Where Can I Pay My National Grid Bill? A Guide to Paying Your Utility Bill

Paying your monthly utility bill to National Grid can seem like a hassle but it doesn’t have to be! National Grid offers many convenient options to pay your bill whether online, in person, by phone, or by mail. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk through the various ways you can pay your National Grid bill and highlight the easiest methods.

Online Bill Pay

The fastest and most convenient way to pay your National Grid bill is online through the National Grid website or mobile app

To pay online, you first need to set up an online account on the National Grid website. This is free and only takes a few minutes. Once your account is set up, you can log in anytime and click the “Pay Bill” link.

You’ll then be able to make a payment using either your checking/savings account, known as Pay By Bank Account, or a credit/debit card. Here are more details on each online payment method:

Pay By Bank Account

• Link your checking or savings account to make payments directly from your bank.
• My favorite option since there are no fees to use your bank account.
• You can make one-time payments or set up recurring automatic payments each month.

Pay By Credit/Debit Card

• Use your Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card to pay your bill.
• A third-party processor Speedpay is used, which charges a service fee per transaction.
• One-time payments only, no recurring payments.

The main perks of paying your National Grid bill online are:

• It’s fast and takes just a few minutes. No need to mail in checks or visit a payment center.
• Payments post to your account right away so your balance is always up to date.
• You can set up automatic payments to avoid late fees.
• Online payments are secure and processed via encrypted transmissions.

As long as you have your National Grid account number and ZIP code handy, the online payment process is quick and painless. I find it to be the easiest way to pay my bill each month.

Pay In Person

If you prefer to pay your National Grid bill in person, you have a couple options:

Authorized Walk-In Payment Locations

National Grid has over 200 authorized walk-in payment locations across Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island where you can pay your bill in person with cash or check. These are typically grocery stores, pharmacies, or check cashing locations.

To find an authorized payment location near you, use the Payment Location Finder on the National Grid website. Make sure to have your 10-digit National Grid account number with you.

National Grid Payment Centers

You can also pay your bill at an official National Grid customer walk-in center. They accept cash, credit/debit cards, money orders, and cashier’s checks.

Some locations may have extended hours on certain days of the month when bills are due. I try to stop by on the due date to avoid a late fee!

• You don’t need a bank account or credit card to pay at a walk-in location. Cash and checks are accepted.

Just be sure to bring your National Grid bill with you so they can apply the payment to the right account.

Pay By Phone

If you don’t have time to pay online or visit a payment center, National Grid lets you pay your bill over the phone.

To pay by phone, call 1-800-322-3223 and have these items ready:

• Your 10-digit National Grid account number
• The amount you owe for the current bill
• Your credit/debit card or checking account info

Payments made by 5pm ET each day are applied to your account same day.

A few things to note about paying your National Grid bill by phone:

• There is a $1.95 fee for debit/credit card payments. No fee for bank account payments.
• You can only make one-time payments, not recurring.
• Hold times can be long during peak call volume times.

Overall, paying by phone is quick and convenient if you just need to make a one-time payment. But for recurring monthly payments, I prefer the auto-pay options when paying online.

Pay By Mail

The old school way of paying bills is still an option too! You can pay your National Grid bill by check through the mail.

Here’s how to pay by mail:

1. Make your check payable to National Grid

2. Write your 10-digit National Grid account number on the check

3. Use the return envelope provided with your bill or mail to:

4. Allow 5-7 business days for your mailed payment to process and post to your account

Some things to keep in mind with paying by mail:

• It takes longer for payments to process and post to your account since they have to go through the postal system.
• You could incur late fees if your check doesn’t arrive on time, whereas online payments post instantly.
• Checks can occasionally get lost in the mail. Always keep your receipt or proof of mailing.
